Green Garters

The traditional first dance in a performance by the Ducklington Morris. References in Percy Manning's notes suggest that, in the nineteenth century, this dance was performed around the Ducklington village maypole. Nowadays, on occasion, we select a "volunteer" from the audience to stand in the middle of the set - in which case we finish the dance with three capers facing inwards, lifting the "maypole" to shoulder height on the final beat (rather in the manner of some other villages' "Maid Of The Mill" dances).

A1, A2   Once-To-Yourself.

A3, A4   Foot-Up-And-Down.

A5, A6   Rounds, but the stepping is SS/SS/G/2PC/SS/SS/G/2PC.

The first sidestep starts on the left foot for all dancers, and the movement takes you forward and out (that is, enlarging the circle). The second sidestep, on the right foot, brings you forward and in towards the centre of the circle - at the end of the second sidestep the radius of the circle is smaller than it was at the start of the rounds. All galley left to restore the circle to its original size and to turn to face counter-clockwise. You should have travelled about one place around the circle at this point. Two plain capers on the spot. Then reverse the stepping of the first half (sidestep right and out, then left and in; galley right) to get back to place. Two plain capers facing across the set.

B1   Whole Hey.

A7, A8   Rounds, but the stepping is HC/HC/G/2PC/HC/HC/G/2PC.

The first pair of half capers should take you about two places around the circle. All galley left to turn to face counter-clockwise. Two plain capers on the spot. The second pair of half capers, back to place, are done with a right foot lead (this is the only place in any of the Ducklington dances that half capers are done with the stepping Rll rather than Lrr, and most peculiar it feels, too!). Galley right, and two plain capers facing across the set.

B2   Whole Hey.

C1, C2   Rounds, but the stepping is SB/SB/G/2PC/SB/SB/G/2PC.

The first pair of squash-beetles (starting on the left foot, then the right) should take you about two places around the circle. All galley left to turn to face counter-clockwise. Two plain capers on the spot. The second pair of squash-beetles, back to place, start on the right foot, then the left. Galley right, and two plain capers facing across the set.

B3   Whole Hey, finishing with four plain capers facing up.
